Dr. Schuit, who is now formerly known as Ms. Schuit, is a teacher at Central Dauphin High School. She teaches Health and Physical Education, and has recently just earned her P.H.D, which is a huge accomplishment for her. Not only does Dr. Schuit help her students succeed in the classroom, but she has created a safe space environment for her students. I had the chance to sit down with Dr. Schuit and get an insight on who she is and what she provides students at Central Dauphin.
Q: What inspired you to be a teacher?
A: My kindergarten PE teacher did.
Q: Where did you go to college?
A: Messiah College.
Q: Why did you put up the note board in your room, where inspirational quotes are written?
A: The give and take board was created because I wanted students to have access to things they needed, and I wanted to create a community where we all take of each other.
Q: What did you receive your P.H.D in?
A: Health psychology and behavioral medicine.
Q: How do you wish to help the mental health of students in this school?
A: I believe that stress is the biggest hindrance to mental health, and I want to help people and teach them how to manage it better.
Q: Do you enjoy being a health/gym teacher? Why or why not?
A: Yes, because I would struggle at a desk job, and I need to be around and moving. I also love that I teach the same lessons but all the interactions everyday are different.
Q: Do you connect well with the students at Central Dauphin?
Q: What would you say to the students graduating this year?
A: Do not forget all the lessons you have learned, and be open minded to learning new things and being challenged in life.
Q: Is there anything you hope to improve or change about this school?
A: I would like to see more connection between teachers and students, like even after school stuff so it helps the climate around Central Dauphin.
Q: Do you think providing a safe space for students is important?
A: Yes, absolutely.
